Description
Roman Empire, Lūcius Septimius Sevērus Pertināx (Septimius Severus), Roman Emperor and Founder of the Severan Dynasty 193-211 AD, Silver Tetradrachm (13.45g, 25mm), Provincial Coinage of Prōvincia Syria, Lāodicēa-ad-mare mint 208 AD. Obverse: Laureate and draped bust of Septimius Severus facing to the right, Ancient Greek legend surrounds, “AYT· KAI· ·CЄOYHPOC· CЄ”. Reverse: Eagle stands right, head turned up to the left, holding wreath in beak and spreading wings, star below, Ancient Greek legend surrounds, “ΔHMAP X· ЄΞ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ· TO· Γ”. Prieur-1149. A superb offering of a provincial tetradrachm of the Severan founder, exceptionally sharp devices, good Extremely Fine, scarce as such.

The obverse Ancient Greek legend reads unabridged as “ΑΥΤOKPATΩP KAIΣAP ΣΕΟΥΗΡΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ”, in lowercase as “Aὐτοκράτωρ Kαῖσαρ Σεουῆρος Σεβαστός”, transliterated as “Autokratōr Kaisar Seouēros Sebastos”, with an English translation of “Imperator Caesar Severus Augustus”. The reverse Ancient Greek legend reads unabridged as “ΔHMAPXIKHϹ ЄΞΟΥϹΙΑϹ ΥΠΑΤΟϹ ΤΟ Γ”, in lowercase as “Δημαρχικῆς Ἐξουσίας Yπατος τὸ Y”, transliterated as “Demarchikēs Exousias Hypatos to G”, with an English translation of “Holder of Tribunician Power, Consul for the Third Time”.
