Description
Charles I, King of England 1625-1649 AD, Silver Crown dated 1644, struck at Exeter mint (1643-1646 AD), Rose mintmark, date to left of mintmark type. Obverse: Crowned figure of King Charles I on horseback riding left, adorned in armour with a sash tied in a bow flowing behind, in his right hand his sword held upright, all within inner beaded border, legend around, “:CAROLVS: D:G: MAG: BRI: FR.A: ET: HI: REX” (“Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Britain, France and Ireland”). Reverse: Garnished, Oval Shield of Arms of the House of Stuart within inner beaded border, legend around, “CHRISTO · AVSPICE · REGNO · 1644” (“I reign with the auspice/protection of Christ, 1644”). Spink-3058. Problem free and struck on a nice round flan yielding a clear date – an attractive Exeter Silver Crown. Very Fine.
These types were struck following the recapturing of Exeter by an army led by Prince Maurice in 1643, thereafter being one of the final Royalist cities to fall into Parliamentarian hands.
