Description
Russian Empire, Peter I ‘великий’ (‘the Great’) of the House of Romanov, as Emperor and Autocrat of all Russia 1721-1725 AD, Silver Rouble (28.01g, 41mm), 1723, Krasny mint, Moscow. Obverse: ‘Moscow’ type bust of Emperor Peter I facing to the right, laureate and cuirassed, Cyrillic legend surrounds, “ПЕТРЬ А ИМПЕРАТОРЬ I САМОДЕРЖЕЦЬ ВСЕРОСИIСКИI”. Reverse: Cross made up of four overlapping ‘П’s with each leg surmounted by an Imperial Crown, date within, “I” in each angle, Cyrillic legend surrounds, “МОНЕТА НОВАѦ ЦЕНА РƔБЛЬ”. Edge: Cyrillic inscription in raised lettering, “РОССИСКОI РУБЛЬ МОСКОВСКОГО ДВАРА”. Bitkin-896; Davenport-1657; KM-162.4. An overall honest and quite charming example of Peter I, with some typical flan/lamination flaws on obverse that don’t detract, nicely toned and the reverse quite choice, good Very Fine.
The obverse Cyrillic legend reads “Пётр Алексеевич, импера́тор’ u самоде́ржець всей Росси́и”, transliterated as “Pjotr Alekseyevich, imperator i samodéržecʹ vsej Rossíi”, with an English translation of “Peter Alexeyevich, Emperor and Autocrat of all of Russia”. The reverse Cyrillic legend reads “моне́та нова́, цена́ рубль”, transliterated as “monéta nová, cená rublʹ”, with an English translation of “new money, worth a Rouble”. The edge Cyrillic legend reads “Российско’ рубль моско́вского двaра́”, transliterated as “rossíjsko rublʹ moskóvskovo dvarа́”, with an English meaning of Russian Rouble by Moscow”.
