Description
Kingdom of Sicily, Roger II ‘the Great’ of the House of Hauteville, as Count of Sicily 1105-1130 AD, Gold Tari (0.68g, 12mm), Messina or Palermo mint, circa 1112-1127 AD. Obverse: Ornate Tau central, Kufic legend to field either side and above, inner lined border and Cufic legend surround. Reverse: Kufic legend in three lines central, inner lined border and further Kufic legend surround. Cf MEC 14, 152-3 (for type); Spahr-38. A little bright in appearance and struck on a small flan losing much of the identifying legends – typical of the type – and with rusty dies, good Very Fine, moderately scarce.
