Description
Maona of Chios and Phocaea, time of Filippo Maria Visconti, as Duke of Milan and Overlord of the Republic of Genoa, Gold Imitative Ducat (3.51g, 20mm), struck in the image of the Venetian Ducat (time of Doges Tommaso Mocenigo and Francesco Foscari), Chios city mint 1421-1436 AD. Obverse: On the left, Saint Mark, wearing nimbus crown and vestments, holds the Book of Gospels and presents staff with pennant to the Doge on the right, who kneels and raises head, “DVX” downward to field above, “S PETRVS” surrounds to left, “D MЄDIOLAN” surrounds to right. Reverse: Christ, wearing nimbus crown and vestments and holding Book of Gospels in left hand and raising right in benediction, stands facing forward surrounded by nine stars, all within mandorla, legend surrounds, “·SIT· T· XPЄ· DAT’ Q· [TV] RЄGIS ISTЄ DVCA’”. A nice example of the imitative type struck later and not in the name of one of the Venetian Doges, unrefined dies typical of the type, evenly worn, good Very Fine or better, moderately scarce.
