Portuguese Empire, Colony of Timor, time of Carlos I ‘o Diplomata’ (‘the Diplomat’) of the House of Braganza, King of Portugal 1889-1908 AD, Silver Pataca (27.00g, 39mm), countermarked coinage by official decree of Portaria Nº 53 on 13th June 1900 at Dili, Timor, by Governor José Celestino da Silva (Governor of Portugese Timor 1894-1908), ‘Christo Cross’ countermarked on a Republic of Mexico (Porfiriato period) Silver Eight Reales dated 1891 Ca MM, Chihuahua mint (KM-377). Obverse of host: Coat of Arms of Mexico (1867-1893), “REPUPLICA MEXICANA.” surrounds above. Reverse of host: Cap of Liberty inscribed with “LIBERTAD” incuse central over beaming sun rays, legend stating the denomination, mintmark, date, Assayer’s initials and purity of silver in dinero and granos surrounds below, “8R. CA 1891 M.M. 10DS. 20GS.”. KM-8. Appears cleaned in the past but has deeply toned with an even steel grey patina since, countermark strong and caused a flan crack through application, a scarce Portuguese colonial issue, Extremely Fine, countermark the same.
