Description
Holy Roman Empire, Free Imperial City of Nuremberg, Gold Ducat (3.46g, 23mm), 1639, Nuremberg city mint. Obverse: Escutcheon of the Armorial of the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg within decorative mantle, six-pointed star above, legend surrounds, “PAX NOVA NVNC REDEAT MARS PEREAQÆ FEROX”. Reverse: Legend in four lines above date within decorative panel, “MONETA AVREA REI·PVB NORIB”. KM-136. A most handsome ducat of the Free Imperial City, well struck devices accompanied with light die cracks both side, light edge flaw to 9h reverse, Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend is a motto which reads unabridged as “pāx nova nunc redeat, Mārs pereatque ferōx”, with an English translation of “now, a new peace may return, and let fierce war perish”. The reverse Latin legend reads “monēta aurea reīpūblicae Norinberga”, with an English translation of “gold money of the Republic of Nuremberg”.
