Description
Romano-Britannic Empire, Mārcus Aurēlius Mausaeus Carausius (Carausius), Usurper Emperor of Roman Britain and Northern Gaul 286-293 AD, Æ Antoninianus, Colonia Claudia Victricensis (Camulodunum) mint 286-287 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Carausius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C CARAVSIVS PF AV”. Reverse: Laetitia stands left, draped in stola and holding wreath aloft in right hand and resting left on anchor, control marks “S C” to field either side, mintmark “C” in exergue, legend surrounds, “LAETITIA AVG”. RIC-255. Decently struck devices despite the slight roughness to the surfaces, typical quality of manufacturing for Carausius with missing devices on reverse, Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Carausius pius fēlīx Augustus”, with an English translation of “Imperator Caesar Carausius, the blessed and pious Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Laetitia Augustī”, with an English translation of “Joy/Happiness of the Augustus / the Augustan Happiness”.
