Description
British Empire, West Indies, Plantation Colony of Tortola, time of King George III to George IV (1760-1820; 1820-1830 AD), Silver Quarter Dollar of Two Shillings (5.21g, 24x19mm), Emergency Issue of 1805-1824 AD, Type III countermark, ‘TORTOLA’ within incuse punch stamped on a quarter-circle cut from a Spanish Empire ‘bust’ Eight Reales of King Charles III or IV. Obverse of Host: Portions of the Royal Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Spain, Pillars of Hercules type (1700-1868); countermarked with the word “TORTOLA” within incuse punch. Reverse of Host: Largely obliterated, residual detail of the laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of King Charles III or IV. KM-17. Deeply toned and with very residual host coin remaining, the countermark strong however, a nice example and seemingly less often seen compared to the half dollar cuts, Host Coin Poor to Fair for type, Countermark good Very Fine.
