Description
British Empire, Raj of Sarawak, White-Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke (1917-1946 AD), Æ One Cent (5.53g, 24mm), 1941 H, The Mint Birmingham (Heaton’s), England. Obverse: Bare head of White Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke facing to the right, legend surrounds, “C.V. BROOKE RAJAH”. Reverse: Denomination central within wreath of olive, tied below by ribbon, mintmark “H” and date below, country above. KM-18. Certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State 63 Red-Brown. A bold currency strike of this key date, the level of mint red certainly puts it on the cusp between Red-Brown and Red designation. While the mintage was initially estimated at around 2 million, it is believed that due to the outbreak of war in Southeast Asia, most of the 1941 H cents were recalled and melted down before they could be sent to Sarawak. As a result, only about 50 business strikes and a few specimen strikes are thought to exist, making it quite rare.
