Description
British Empire, New Zealand, King George V (1910-1936 AD), Silver Crown, 1935, Centenary of the Treaty of Waitangi commemorative issue, Royal mint, London. Obverse: Crowned bust of King George V facing to the left, wearing coronation robes, legend surrounds, “GEORGE V KING EMPEROR”. Reverse: Vis-à-vis figures of Maori Chief Tamati Waka Nene on the left and British Captain William Hobson, R.N. on the right, shaking hands, Tudor Crown above, “WAITANGI” in exergue, country, denomination and date surrounds, “NEW ZEALAND CROWN 1935”. KM-6. Certified and graded by NGC as Proof 65. Although given a proof designation, it is our opinion that this piece is actually a currency strike and much scarcer in high grade – this is clear by the PCGS and NGC population reports.
A similar Waitangi crown certified and graded as Proof 65 sold for US$6900.
