John McRae, born in 1876 in Dinwall Ross, Scotland, was a 22-year-old labourer by trade at the time of his attestation for the British Army, enlisting in Glasgow with the Scots Guards on the 22nd October 1878.
McRae served briefly with the 2nd Scot’s Guards in London after the 28th October 1878, and received good conduct pay on the 21st October 1879 and 14th October 1881. Several years later, he would serve with the 1st Scot’s Guards in Egypt and the Sudan 1884-1885, receiving both the Egypt Medal and the Khedive’s star. He would later discharge from the British Army on the 21st October 1885.
