Description
Dutch Republic, the Seven United Netherlands, Silver Ducaton or ‘Rider’ (32.39g, 42mm), 1760, Hoorn or Medemblik mint, West Friesland. Obverse: Armoured Dutch knight, holding sword aloft in right hand and the reins in left, atop horse which leaps to the right, crowned Shield of Arms of the Region of West Friesland below, legend ending with the mintmark chicken surrounds, “MO: NO: ARG: CONFŒ BELG: PRO: WESTF·”. Reverse: Arms of the Dutch Republic surmounted by crown and supported by two crowned lions guardant, ornate cartouche below bearing the date, legend surrounds, “CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT”. KM-127.1. A very light edge fault to 1h obverse, otherwise a pleasing example, evenly worn and with a nice grey cabinet tone, good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Monēta nova argentea prōvinciārum Cōnfoederātiōnis Belgicārum, West Friesland”, with an English meaning of “New silver money of the Provinces of the Confederation of Belgium, West Friesland”. The reverse Latin legend is stated in full as “concordia rēs parvæ crēscunt”, with an English translation of “Small things thrive/come to be through unity”.
