United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, the Kingdom of Brazil, John VI, as King of Portugal and Brazil, Silver 960 Reis (26.89g, 41mm), 1817 R, Rio de Janeiro mint, overstruck on a Spanish Empire 8 Reales of King Ferdinand VII. Obverse: Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Portugal surmounted by Royal Crown, date either side above mark of value to left field and three 4-petal flowers to right field, legend surrounds, “JOANNES· D·G· PORT· P· REGENS· ET· BRAS· D·”. Reverse: Globe, which is made up of long bands, set over an Order of Christ cross, diagonal sash bearing the mintmark over globe, legend surrounds, “SUBQ’ SIGN. NATA STAB.”. KM-307.3. A bold piece and nicely toned, unevenly struck on the obverse with slight doubling, quite a lot of Spanish host coin visible with VII for ‘Ferdinand VII’ clear, details good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
