Description
Aksumite Empire, Ebana, King of Aksum fl. 5th century AD, Gold Unit (1.58g, 17mm), circa 460-480 AD. Obverse: Crowned and draped bust of King Ebana facing to the right, holding spear in right hand, ears of barley set either side, inner border and legend surrounds (begins 9h), “CΛC + CIϞ + CΛX + ΛCΛ +”. Reverse: Draped bust of King Ebana facing to the right, wearing regnal head cloth and holding fly-whisk in right hand, ears of barley set either side, inner border and legend surrounds (beginning at 3h), “BΛƆ + ΛCΛ +ƆƆ𐐒 + ΛNΛ +”. Hahn & Keck-43; SACAM-274. A nice piece with a bold obverse portrait and interestingly large die crack resulting in a noticeable raised line, the reverse die quite rusty, near Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
