Description
Aksumite Empire, Eon, King of Aksum circa early – mid 5th Century AD, Gold Unit (1.61g, 17mm), circa 410-450 AD. Obverse: Crowned and draped bust of King Eon facing to the right, holding spear in right hand, ears of barley set either side, inner border and legend surrounds (begins 9h), “ƆΛƆ + ƆΛC + CΛX + ΛCΛ +”. Reverse: Draped bust of King Eon facing to the right, wearing regnal head cloth, ears of barley set either side, inner border and legend surrounds (beginning at 6h), “CѠI + CIC + IΛИ + ΛΛΦ +”. Hahn & Keck-38. A fairly bold piece of Eon, struck with a rusty die, particularly the reverse, and with a flan flaw over the obverse portraiture, the devices basically all clear and legible, a nice example, near Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
