George III of the House of Hanover, King of the United Kingdom 1760-1820 AD, Gold Half Sovereign (3.95g, 19mm), 1817, New Coinage period. Obverse: Laureate head of King George III facing to the right, date below, legend surrounds, “GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA”. Reverse: Shield of Arms of the United Kingdoms (1816-1837) surmounted by St. Edward’s Crown, legend surrounds, “BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF:”. Spink-3786. A charming piece, evenly worn, minor residue through peripheral reverse devices, near Extremely Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Geōrgius Tertius, Deī Grātiā” with an English translation of “George the Third, by the Grace of God”. The Obverse legend continues onto the reverse and reads “Britanniārum Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor”, with an English translation of “King of the British People, Defender of the Faith”.
