Description
Kingdom of Great Britain, George III of the House of Hanover, King of Great Britain 1760-1820 AD, Æ Half Penny (12.28g, 30mm), 1799, Soho mint, Birmingham. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of King George III facing to the right, legend surrounds, “GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA REX”. Reverse: Britannia enthroned left, draped and holding olive sprig aloft in right hand and resting trident in left arm, shield bearing the Union Jack rests by the throne by plinth inscribed “SOHO”, ocean waves below, small ship with 5 incuse gunports to lower left background, date below, legend surrounds, “BRITANNIA”. S-3778. Certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State 65 Brown. A borderline ‘brown’ designation when beholding the ample red lustre on this gem of a specimen, a very attractive example.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Geōrgius, Deī grātiā, Rex”, with an English translation of “George, by the grace of God, King”.
