United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Victoria of the House of Hanover, Queen of the United Kingdom 1837-1901 AD, Gold Five Pounds, 1887, Royal mint London. Obverse: ‘Jubilee’ style bust of Queen Victoria facing to the left, wearing small crown with veil, pearl earring and necklace of 13 pearls, engraver’s initials ‘J.E.B.’ (Joseph Edgar Boehm) on truncation, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D:”. Reverse: Saint George of Lydda, bare except for his plumed helmet and billowing cloak, rears his horse above the defeated Dragon of Silene, ready to finish his foe with his sword, his lance, Ascalon, remains half embedded in its torso and the shaft rests to the left on the exergual ground-line; engraver’s initials ‘B.P.’ (Benedetto Pistrucci) and date in exergue. Marsh-F30. Calendar year mintage of 53,844. Certified and graded by NGC as Mint State 61 and housed in Black ‘Pallas Collection’ Holder. A dazzling example from a nice collection, bold devices and with abundant visual appeal.
The obverse Latin legend is the royal titulature of Queen Victoria and reads unabridged as “Victoria, Deī grātiā, Britanniārum Rēgīna, Fideī Dēfēnstrīx”, with an English translation of “Victoria, by the grace of God, Queen of the British people, Defender of the Faith”.
