Description
Kingdom of England, William III of the House of Orange-Nassau, as King of England and sole monarch 1694-1702 AD, Silver Crown (29.87g, 39mm), 1695, edge OCTAVO, Royal mint London. Obverse: First laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of King William III facing to the right, legend surrounds, “GVLIELMVS· III· DEI· GRA·”. Reverse: Reverse: Heraldic Charges of the Armorial of the House of Stuart displayed cruciform, each escutcheon surmounted by the Tudor Crown, eight strings to the Irish Charge, escutcheon of the Armorial of Nassau central, date either side of top crown, legend surrounds, “·MAG: BR· FRA· ET· HIB· REX·”. Edge: Inscription in raised lettering, “DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI OCTAVO”. Bull-991; S-3470. Nicely toned and a well struck portrait, some light blemishes, a collectible example William III crown, Very Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The Latin legend across the obverse and reverse is the royal titulature of King William III, reading unabridged as “Gulielmus tertius, Deī grātiā, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rēx”, with an English translation of “William the Third, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”. The edge Latin legend is stated in full and reads “Decus et tūtāmen, annō regni octavo”, with an English translation of “An ornament and safeguard, eighth regnal year”.
