William IV of the House of Hanover, King of the United Kingdom 1830-1837 AD, Gold Sovereign (7.94g, 22mm), 1837, Royal mint London. Obverse: Bare head of King William IV facing to the right, engraver’s initials “W.W.” (William Wyon) incuse on truncation, legend surrounds, “GULIELMUS IIII D:G: BRITANNIAR: REX F:D:”. Reverse: Royal Arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Hanover, and Brunswick (1816-1837) within ornate mantle and surmounted by St. Edward’s Crown, date below. Marsh-21; S-3829b. A lovely example of the last sovereign of King William IV, a nice portrait with wear to high point and well struck heraldry, near Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend is the Royal titulature of King William IV and reads unabridged as “Gulielmus quārtus, Deī grātiā, Britanniārum Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor”, with an English translation of “William the fourth, by the Grace of God, King of the British People, Defender of the Faith”.
