Description
George V of the House of Windsor, King of the United Kingdom 1910-1936 AD, Silver Proof ‘Wreath’ Crown (28.30g, 39mm), 1927, Royal mint, London. Obverse: Bare head of King George V facing to the left, engraver’s initials ‘B.M.’ (Edgar Bertram Mackennal) on truncation in relief, legend surrounds, “GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX”. Reverse: Tudor Crown central, date either side of crown’s cross pattée, within wreath comprising of National floral emblems of English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock, denomination and engraver’s initials “KG” (George Kruger Gray) below, legend surrounds above, “FID DEF IND IMP”. Spink-4036. Calendar Year mintage of 15,030 pieces. A circulated proof, light contact marks and hairlines, an example of the date nonetheless, near Fleur de Coin.
The Latin legend begins on the obverse and continues on the reverse, reading “Geōrgius Quīntus, Deī Grātiā, Britanniārum Omnium Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor, Indiae Imperātor”, with an English translation of “George the Fifth, by the Grace of God, King of all the British People, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India”.
