Description
Victoria of the House of Hanover, Queen of the United Kingdom 1837-1901 AD, Silver Crown, 1844, Cinquefoil stops on edge. Obverse: First young, bare head of Queen Victoria facing to the left, her hair double filleted and collected in an updo knot, engraver’s initials “W. WYON. RA” (William Wyon) in relief on truncation, date below, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA”. Reverse: Crowned Shield of Arms of the United Kingdom within olive wreath, each branch tied with ribbon, National Floral monogram of English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock below in exergue, legend surrounds, “BRITANNIAR: REG: FID: DEF:”. Edge: Inscription in incuse lettering with cinquefoil stops, “DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI VIII”. Spink-3882; Bull-2562; ESC-281. Full hairline and well struck on the reverse, a nice dull grey patina, near Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Victoria, Deī Grātiā”, with an English translation of “Victoria, by the Grace of God”. The Reverse Latin legend continues from the obverse and reads “Britanniārum Rēgīna, Fideī Dēfēnstrīx”, with an English translation of “Queen of the British people, Defender of the Faith”. The Edge Latin legend is stated in full and reads “Decus et tūtāmen, annō regni octavo”, with an English translation of “An ornament and safeguard, eighth regnal year”.
