Kingdom of England, Charles II of the House of Stuart, King of England and Scotland 1660-1685 AD, Silver Threepence (1.48g, 20mm), Third Hammered issue, initial mark crown (1660-1662 AD), Royal mint, London. Obverse: Crowned bust of King Charles II facing to the left, wearing elaborate ermine royal robe, mark of value “III” to right field, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “·CAROLVS· II· D·G· M· BR· FR· ET· HI· REX·”. Reverse: Royal Arms of the Kingdom of England, as borne by King Charles II, set over cross fourchée, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “CHRISTO· AVSPICE· REGNO”. S-3325. Certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State 61. An alluring mint state hammer threepence of Charles II, some ever so light doubling to obverse, easily overlooked when beholding the portraiture and refined reverse heraldry, a very nice example.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Carolus Secundus, deī grātiā, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles the second, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”. The reverse Latin legend is stated in full as “chrīstō auspice rēgnō”, with an English translation of “I rule with the patronage of Christ”.
