Description
Charles I of the House of Stuart, King of England 1625-1649 AD, Silver Shilling (5.10g, 31mm), Group A, initial mark Cross Calvary 1625-1626 AD, Tower mint, London under the authority of the King. Obverse: Second crowned bust of King Charles I facing to the left, wearing coronation robes of elaborate lace ruff and decorative doublet, mark of value “XII” to right field, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “CAROLVS D:G: MAG: BR: FR: ET HI: REX”. Reverse: Shield of Arms of the House of Stuart over long cross fourchée, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO”. Spink-2782; North-2216. A most pleasing group A shilling, typically soft over central devices, struck on an attractive round flan and lightly toned with splashes of rainbow through the periphery, most collectible as such, details Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Carolus, Deī Grātiā, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”. The reverse Latin legend reads “chrīstō auspice rēgnō”, with an English translation of “I rule with the patronage of Christ”.
