Description
Titus Caesar Vespasiānus (Titus), Roman Emperor of the Flavian Dynasty, as Augustus 79-81 AD, Silver Denarius (3.46g, 17mm), Rome mint 79 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Titus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP TITVS CΛES VESPΛSIΛN AVG PM”. Reverse: Venus stands right leaning on column, seen from behind, holding helmet aloft in right hand and spear in left, legend surrounds, “TR P VIIII IMP XIIII COS VII PP”. RIC-34; RSC-268; Sear-2507. A bold portrait of typical Flavian style, well centred each side and lightly toned, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The Latin legend names Emperor Titus and his titles and begins on the obverse and continues onto the reverse, reading unabridged as “Imperātor Titus Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās nōnum, cōnsulāritās septimum, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Imperator Titus Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, holder of Tribunician Power for the ninth time, honoured with the office of Consul for a seventh term, Father of the Nation”.
