Description
Gallic Empire, Marcus Cassianius Latinius Postumus, Romano-Gallic Emperor 260-269 AD, Æ Sestertius (16.44g, 31mm), Lyons mint 261 AD. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Postumus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C POSTVMVS PF AVG”. Reverse: Victoria advancing left, draped in stola and holding wreath aloft in right hand and palm branch in left, captive sits tied up on the left, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA AVG”. RIC-170; Sear-11099. A few flan flaws each side, quite easily overlooked, a scarce piece far less often seen compared with Postumus’ large output of silver or billon Antoninianii, round, somewhat ragged flan, a nice portrait, details Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Postumus pius fēlīx Augustus”, with an English translation of “Imperator Caesar Postumus, the blessed and pious Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “victōria Augustī”, with an English translation of “victory of the Augustus”.
