Description
Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 14-37 AD, Silver Denarius (3.59g, 18.5mm), Group 6, Lugdunum mint 36-37 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Tiberius facing to the right, exhibiting older features, legend surrounds, “TI CΛESΛR DIVI ΛVG F ΛVGVSTVS”. Reverse: Livia Drusilla, mother of Tiberius, seated facing to the right on backless throne with ornate legs, wearing stola which flows onto crossed legs, both feet resting on footstool; she is portrayed as Pax, holding a grounded staff in right hand and olive branch aloft in left, single exergual line below, legend surrounds, “PONTIF MAXIM”. The famous ‘tribute penny’ type of Tiberius struck at Lugdunum, a later issue attributed to Group 6 with Tiberius portrayed with aged and distinguished verism, toned each side and evenly worn, details Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Tiberius Caesar, dīvī Augustī fīlius, Augustus”, with an English translation of “Tiberius Caesar, son of divine Augustus, Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “Pontifex Maximus”, with an English translation of “Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs”.
