Description
Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 41-54 AD, Silver Denarius (3.74g, 18mm), Rome mint 46-47 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Claudius I facing to the right, legend surrounds, “TI CLAVD CAESAR· AVG· PM TR P VI IMP XI”. Reverse: Oak wreath surrounds central horizontal legend, “SPQR P.P OB CS”. RIC-41; RSC-87; Sear-1848. A masterful denarius of an emperor seldom available in any denomination outside of bronze issues, featuring a portrait engraved in distinguished and veristic style, minor deposit in obverse legend otherwise deeply toned and choicely centred each side, of the utmost collectability, details Very Fine and quite scarce.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās sextum, Imperātor ūndecimum”, stating most of Claudius I’s regnal name as well as several of his titles, with an English translation of “Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus, High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician Power for the sixth time, honoured with the title of Imperator for the eleventh time”. The reverse Latin legend reads “senātus populusque rōmānus, Pater Patriae, ob civis servātōs”, with an English translation of “The Roman Senate and People, Father of the Nation, in Direction of Saving/Serving Citizens”.
