Description
Flavius Valerius Constantinus, Roman Emperor of the Constantinian Dynasty 306-337 AD, Æ reduced Follis (3.08g, 19mm), Londinium mint 321-322 AD. Obverse: Laureate and cuirassed bust of Constantine I facing to the left, holding eagle-tipped sceptre forward, legend surrounds, “CONSTANTINVS AVG”. Reverse: Altar inscribed “VOTIS XX” central surmounted by glove, three stars above, mintmark “PLON” in exergue, legend surrounds, “BEATA TRANQVILLITAS”. Cloke & Toone-9.03.007; RIC VII-225; Sear-16172. A very desirable portrait type of Constantine I ‘the great’, some minor adhesions, some silvering remains, scarce as such, near Extremely Fine, reverse Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Cōnstantīnus Augustus”, with an English translation of “Constantine Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “beāta tranquillitās”, with an English translation of “happy/blessed tranquillity or serenity”. The reverse altar is inscribed “vōtīs vīcēnnalibus”, with an English translation of “Vows/prayers on the twentieth anniversary of his reign”.
