Description
Titus Caesar Vespasianus, as Augustus of the Flavian Dynasty 79-81 AD, Silver Denarius (3.16g, 17mm), Rome mint 1 January-30 June 80 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Titus facing to the left, legend surrounds, “IMP TITVS CΛES VESPΛSIΛN ΛVG PM”. Reverse: Sella curulis surmounted by laurel wreath, legend surrounds, “TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII PP”. RIC-109; RSC-318. Well struck and choicely centred on an oval flan featuring a noteworthy portrait of fine and veristically Flavian style, very minor contact marks, otherwise a very collectible piece, near Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Titus Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus, Pontifex Maximus”, with an English translation of “Imperator Titus Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs”. The Obverse legend continues onto the Reverse and reads “Tribūnīciā Potestate nōnum, Imperātor decimum quīntum, cōnsulāritās octāvum, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Invested with Tribunician Power for the ninth time, holder of the position of Imperator for the fifteenth time, honoured with the office of Consul in his eighth term, Father of the Nation”.
