Description
Jovianus, as Roman Emperor and non-dynastic successor to the Constantinian Dynasty 363-364 AD, Æ1 (28mm), Thessalonica mint 363-364 AD. Obverse: Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Jovian facing to the right, legend surrounds, “DN IOVIANVS PF PP AVG”. Reverse: Jovian stands left, head turned to the right, holding Victoria surmounting globe aloft in left hand and labarum in right, mintmark “TESA” in exergue, legend surrounds, “VICTORIA ROMANORVM”. Sear-19213; RIC Thessalonica-234. A modest example, well centred and complete in design, minor flan flaw below exergue, nice green patina, details near Very Fine or a touch better.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Dominus Noster, Ioviānus, pius fēlīx, perpetuus Augustus”, with an English translaton of “Our Lord, Jovian, the blessed and pious, the perpetual Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “victōria rōmānōrum”, with an English translation of “Victory of the Roman People”.
