Description
Marcus Antonius Gordianus, as the sixth Emperor from the ‘year of the six emperors’ 238-244 AD, Silver Antoninianus, Rome mint 238-244 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG”. Reverse: Providentia stands facing to the left, draped and holding sceptre in left hand and pointing wand at globe below in right, legend surrounds, “PROVID AVG”. Sear-8654; RIC-148; RSC-296. Reverse weakly struck, easily overlooked when viewing the bold and choice obverse, sharply struck and of archetypical style for the young Gordian III, Extremely Fine, reverse less so.
