Description
Tiberius Caesar Augustus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 14-37 AD, Silver Denarius (3.67g, 17.50mm), Group 4, Lugdunum mint 18-35 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Tiberius facing to the right, portrayed with youthful features, legend surrounds, “[TI CΛESΛ]R DIVI ΛVG F ΛVGVST[VS]”. Reverse: Livia Drusilla, mother of Tiberius, seated facing to the right on backless throne with ornate legs, drapery flows onto crossed legs with both feet resting on footstool; she is portrayed as Pax, holding a long vertical sceptre and olive branch, single exergual line below, legend surrounds, “PONTIF MAXIM”. An attractive, youthful portrait of Tiberius for the mass-period of group 4 denarii, well centred, particularly on the reverse, and with deep cabinet toning, details Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Tiberius Caesar, Divi Augusti Filius, Augustus”, with an English translation of “Tiberius Caesar, son of the Divine Augustus, Augustus”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “Pontifex Maximus”, with an English translation of “Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs”.
