Theophilus, Byzantine Emperor of the Amorian Dynasty 829-842 AD, Gold Solidus (4.42g, 20mm), Constantinople mint 829-842 AD. Obverse: Crowned half-length bust of Theophilus facing forward, clad in chlamys and holding patriarchal cross and akakia, legend surrounds, “ΘЄOFILOS bASILЄIΘ”. Reverse: Crowned half-length busts of Michael II, Theophilos’ father and predecessor, to the left and Constantine, Theophilos’ son, to the right, each clad in chlamys, cross in field above, legend surrounds, “+ MIXΛHL S COhSƮAhƮIh I”. Sear-1653; Doc-3. A sensational piece of Theophilus, choicely centred and well struck, a very collectible type featuring the three co-emperors, near Extremely Fine, reverse Extremely Fine.
