Roman Republic, L. Antestius Gragulus, Silver Denarius (3.83g, 19mm), Rome mint 136 BC. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing winged Attic helmet, mark of value to lower right field, “GRAG” downward to left. Reverse: Jupiter, holding thunder aloft in right hand and sceptre in left, commands quadriga which advances to the right, moneyer’s name “L·ANTES” (‘ANTE’ ligated) below, “ROMA” in exergue. An exceptional offering in terms of preservation, the unfortunate pitting on the obverse could be overlooked when considering the most noteworthy rendition of Jupiter commanding a quadriga on the reverse, details Extremely Fine.
