Description
Titus Flavius Domitianus, as Augustus of the Flavian Dynasty 81-96 AD, Silver Denarius (3.27g, 20mm), Rome mint 85 AD. Obverse: Laureate bust of Domitian facing to the right, aegis over far-left shoulder, legend surrounds, “IMP CΛES DOMIT ΛVG GERM PM TR P IIII”. Reverse: Minerva stands facing to the left, wearing crested helmet and draped in stola and holding upright spear in right hand, legend surrounds, “IMP VIII COS XI CENS POT P.P.”. RIC-336; RSC-178; Sear-2727. Struck on a remarkably broad, medallic like flan, this piece, from the extensive Minerva series of Domitian, displays a nice array of blue toning amongst the cabinet grey, despite minor hairlines, the remaining detail is desirable, Very Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Domitiānus Augustus, Germānicus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās quārtum”, with an English translation of “Imperator Caesar Domitianus Augustus, conqueror of the Germans, chief high priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician power for the fourth time”. The reverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor octāvum, Cōnsulāritās ūndecimum, Cēnsōria potestās, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “honoured with the title of Imperator for the eighth time, honoured with the office of Consul for an eleventh term, holder of Censorial power, Father of the Nation”.
