Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy VIII Euergétēs II (‘the Benefactor’) Tryphōn (‘the Opulent’) ‘Physkōn’, King of Ptolemaic Egypt in his second reign 144-132/1 BC, Silver Tetradrachm (14.19g, 25mm, Ptolemaic Standard), regnal year ΛB (32), Kition mint, Cyprus 139/138 BC. Obverse: Diademed head of King Ptolemy I Soter facing to the right, wearing aegis around neck. Reverse: Eagle stands facing to the left atop thunderbolt, wings closed, regnal year “L AB” above aphlaston in left field, “KI” in right field, “BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY” surrounds. Svoronos-1583. Very minor marks and some deposits on obverse, a particularly well struck example and quite pleasing in hand, good Very Fine.
The obverse Ancient Greek legend reads “ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ” or “Πτολεμαΐς βασιλεύς”, Latinized as “Ptolemaḯs Basileús”, with an English translation as “King Ptolemy”.
