Description
Macedonian Empire, Hellenistic period, Alexander III of the Argead Dynasty, Basileus of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Drachm (4.14g, 17mm, Attic standard), posthumous issue, Abydos mint 301/300-300/299 BC, struck under the authority of Lysimachos in the position of King of Asia Minor. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding perched eagle aloft in right hand and grounded sceptre in left, drapery flows around his waist on crossed legs, forepart of lion above monogram to left field, head of griffon below throne, “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟ[Υ]” downward to right. Price-1584. Well struck both sides, reverse choice but with a worn die, Very Fine.
