Description
Lysimachian Empire, Lysimachos, as King of Thrace (from 306 BC) and Asia Minor 301-281 BC, Silver Drachm (4.29g, 19mm, Attic standard), Lampsakos mint 299/8-297/6 BC, struck in the image of the types of King Alexander III ‘the Great’ of Macedon (336-323 BC). Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding perched eagle aloft in right hand and grounded sceptre in left, drapery flows around his waist on crossed legs, forepart of Pegasus left above forepart of a lion left to left field, torch below throne, “ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ” downward to right, “ΛΥΣΙMΑXOY” to left below. Price-L11; Thompson-35. Struck from somewhat worn dies, choicely centred each side however with all devices present, a nice example struck in the name of Lysimachos, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
