Description
Roman Empire, Tiberius Caesar Augustus (Tiberius), Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 14-37 AD, Gold Aureus (7.64g, 18mm), Rome mint 15-17 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Tiberius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “TI CΛESΛR DIVI ΛVG F ΛVGVSTVS”. Reverse: Tiberius commands quadriga right, holding reigns in right hand and laurel wreath aloft in left, legend begins in the exergue and surrounds above, “IMP VII· TR· POT· XVII”. RIC-3; Calicó 308. A bold and handsome aureus of Tiberius and a noteworthy reverse type that is far scarcer compared to the ‘Tribute Penny’ type, evenly worn and with full devices on flan, a very desirable piece, good Very Fine or better, quite scarce.
The Latin legend spanning across both obverse and reverse is the royal titulature of Emperor Tiberius, reading unabridged as “Tiberius Caesar dīvī Augustī fīlius Augustus, Imperātor septimum, Tribūnīciā Potestas septimum decimum”, with an English translation of “Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of the Divine Augustus, honoured with the title of Imperator for the seventh time, invested with Tribunician Power for the seventeenth time”.
