Macedonian Empire, the Alexandrine Era, Alexander III ‘the Great’ of the Argead Dynasty, Silver Drachm (4.25g, 17mm, Attic Standard), Abydus mint circa 310-301 BC, under the authority of Antigonos I Monophthalmos as Strategos of Asia. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus seated on backless throne facing to the left, drapery flows around his waist onto crossed legs, holding eagle in outstretched right hand and long sceptre in left, left facing head of Ammon to left field, upright ivy-leaf beneath throne, “[AΛE]ΞANΔPOY” downward to the right. Price-1551. Captured on a broad flan, the die-work is most impressive – the obverse is of very fine style and choicely well centred, an attractive piece, good Very Fine.
