Macedonian Empire, the Alexandrine Era, Alexander III ‘the Great’ of the Argead Dynasty, Silver Drachm (4.17g, 17mm, Attic Standard), Abydus mint circa 310-301 BC, under the authority of Antigonos I Monophthalmos as Strategos of Asia. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus seated on backless throne facing to the left, drapery flows around his waist onto crossed legs, holding eagle in outstretched right hand and long sceptre in left, “X T” monogram (Price monogram 875) to left field, upright ivy-leaf beneath throne, “[A]ΛEΞANΔPOY” downward to the right, upright caduceus to outer right field. Price-1545. Minorly off centre on the reverse although Herakle’s facial features virtually all present, the reverse well centred with all devices present on flan, a nice example, good Very Fine.
