Description
Sicily, Syracuse, Agathocles, as Tyrant of Syracuse circa 317-289 BC, Silver Tetradrachm (17.00g, 25mm, Attic Standard), circa 317-310 BC. Obverse: Head of the Nymph Arethusa facing to the left, wearing wreath of grain ears, triple-pendant earring, and pearl necklace, three dolphins surround, “NK” below. Reverse: Charioteer, draped in peplos, commands a quadriga in gallop to the left, holding kentron aloft in right hand and the reins in left, triskelion above, exergual ground line below, “[Σ]YPAKOΣIΩN” above “AI” monogram in exergue. HGC-1348; Weber-1348. Deeply toned with an exceptional display of original cabinet steel-grey shades, evenly worn and visually attractive, slight off-centring on the reverse although easily overlooked, a very desirable piece, details good Very Fine.
The Ancient Greek inscription in the reverse exergue reads “ΣYPAKOΣIΩN” or “Σῠρᾱκοσιῶν” in lowercase, transliterated as “Surākosíōn”, the genitive plural of the Ancient Greek word “Σῠρᾱκόσῐος” (transliterated as “Surākósios”), with an English translation of “of the Syracusans”.
