Description
Islands off Attica, Aegina, Silver Stater of Two Drachms (12.23g, 19mm, Aeginetan Standard), circa 456/45-431 BC. Obverse: High relief figure of a land tortoise with segmented shell seen from above. Reverse: Large incuse square divided into five compartments by broad bands in the form of a skew pattern. Meadows-Group IIIb, HGC 6, 437. A most handsome and imposing offering of a late classical Greek type which is most revered by collectors, in recent times the Aegina staters have matured significantly with large premiums for well centred, problem free examples, and in particular for the earlier sea turtle types, nicely toned and virtually all devices on flan, good Very Fine, scarce.
