Description
Cilicia, Nagidos, Silver Stater of Two Siglos (10.64g, 24mm, Persian Standard), circa 400-385/4 BC. Obverse: Aphrodite enthroned facing to the left, draped and wearing small turreted crown, holding patera in extended right hand over altar ornate with laurel wreath; Eros stands to the right, crowning Aphrodite with a wreath he holds aloft in right hand. Reverse: Dionysus stands forward, head turned to the left, draped and holding Thrysus in left hand and grape bunch on vine in right, “Z” to lower left field, “NAΓIΔE[ΩN]” to right. Casabonne Type-4; Lederer-25; BMC-12. An attractive and captivating piece, well centred and with each figure engraved in quite fine style, despite the minorly rusty dies, a negative easily overlooked, this piece is certainly embodies the eye catching, artistically inventive die work of the city states of Cilicia, particularly of Tarsus and Nagidos, details good Very Fine.
