Description
Achaemenid Empire, Satrapy of Eber-Nari, Autonomous City State of Tyre, Azémilkos (Phoenician: ‘Ozmilk), Phoenician King of Tyre circa 349-311/0 BC, Silver Shekel (8.59g, 19.5mm, Attic standard), dated Regnal Year 15, Tyre mint 335/334 BC. Obverse: Melqart, holding reins and arched bow, rides a Hippocampus to the right, ocean waves below, within which a dolphin swims parallelly. Reverse: Owl stands to the right, head turned facing forward, crook and flail behind, Aramaic legend to right field, Phoenician letter ‘Ayin’ (for ‘Ozmilk) and regnal year “|||||¬” (15). HGC 10, 349; DCA2 928. Although an obverse struck softly with worn dies, the iconic owl reverse is well struck and notably attractive, deeply toned and choice, good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
