Description
George V of the House of Windsor, King of the United Kingdom 1910-1936 AD, Silver ‘Wreath’ Crown of Five Shillings (28.18g, 38.5mm), 1933. Obverse: Bare head of King George V facing to the left, engraver’s initials ‘B.M.’ (Edgar Bertram Mackennal) on truncation in relief, legend surrounds, “GEORGIVS V DEI GRA: BRITT: OMN: REX”. Reverse: Tudor Crown central, date either side of cross pattée, wreath comprising of the National floral emblems of English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock surrounds, denomination and engraver’s initials “KG” (George Kruger Gray) below, legend surrounds, “FID DEF IND IMP”. Spink-4036; Bull-3644; ESC-373. Mintage of 7,132. Original, dull-grey surfaces, minor contact marks otherwise quite attractive, an ever-popular type, good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
The Latin legend begins on the obverse and continues on the reverse, reading “Geōrgius Quīntus, Deī Grātiā, Britanniārum Omnium Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor, Indiae Imperātor”, with an English translation of “George the Fifth, by the Grace of God, King of all the British People, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India”.
