Description
Duchy of Milan, Giovanni Galeazzo Maria Sforza of the House of Sforza, the sixth Duke of Milan 1476-1494 AD, with his uncle Ludovico Maria Sforza, Silver Grossone da 21½ soldi – Testone (9.56g, 27.5mm), Second period, Milan mint 1492-1494 AD. Obverse: Armoured bust of Duke Giovanni Galeazzo Maria Sforza facing to the right, within inner beaded border, mitred and nimbate head (as initial mark) above, legend surrounds, “·IO GZ· M· SF· VICECO· DVX· MLI· SX·”. Reverse: Armoured bust of Ludovico Maria Sforza facing to the right, within inner beaded border, mitred and nimbate head (as initial mark) above, legend surrounds, “·LVDOVICVS· PTRVVS· GVBNANS·”. MIR-221/1. Some light obverse hairlines to field, largely masked by quite idyllic cabinet toning of deep greys, some light reverse doubling, evenly worn and quite attractive in hand, good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Iōannēs Galeazzo Marīa Sforza, vicecomes, Dux Mediolānī sextus”, with an English translation of “Giovanni Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Viscount, the sixth Duke of Milan”. The reverse Latin legend reads “Lūdovīcus, Patruus gubernāns”, with an English translation of “Ludovico, the governing Uncle”.
