Spanish Empire, Viceroyalty of New Granada, Charles IV of the House of Bourbon-Anjou, King of Spain 1788-1808 AD, Gold Eight Escudos (26.87g, 37.5mm), 1789 P SF, Popayan mint, Columbia. Obverse: Draped and cuirassed bust of the late King Charles III facing to the right, date below, legend surrounds, “CAROL· IV· D·G· HISP. ET IND· R·”. Reverse: Royal Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Spain (1761-1788), mintmark “P·” and assayer’s initial “·SF” below, legend surrounds, “·IN· UTROQ· FELIX· ·AUSPICE· DEO·”. KM-53. A nice Columbia Eight Escudo, very light, typical marks to field, otherwise visually attractive and with notably sharp reverse devices, details good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine or basically so.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Carolus quārtus, Deī Grātiā, Hispāniae et Indiae rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles the fourth, by the Grace of God, King of Spain and the Indies”. The reverse Latin legend is stated in full as “in utrōque fēlīx auspice Deō”, with an English translation of “under the auspices of God there is happiness on both sides”.
